A cathedral built on centuries of faith
The cathedral stands in the oldest part of Naples, along the line of the ancient decumani, on ground that had been sacred since antiquity. Building began in the late 13th century at the wish of Charles II of Anjou, next to early Christian buildings such as the basilica of Santa Restituta, which is still part of the cathedral today. Earthquakes, collapses and restorations have turned it into an architectural palimpsest where 14th-century Gothic, Baroque and the Neo-Gothic of the 19th-century facade coexist. Its official name is the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta.
The story of the Treasure Chapel is tied to a dramatic moment. In 1526 the city was crushed by war, by the threat of Vesuvius and by a plague that had killed tens of thousands. On 13 January 1527 the people of Naples, before a notary and the saint's relics, bound themselves by a genuine contract: in return for an end to the plague, they would build Saint Januarius a chapel without equal. The Deputation, a lay body that still runs the chapel today, was created to honour that vow.
The design was entrusted to the architect Francesco Grimaldi, with a double-shell dome. The painting campaign was marked by fierce tensions: Neapolitan painters, left out, went as far as intimidating the artists brought in from elsewhere, and Guido Reni left the city. Domenichino, hired in 1631, worked on the chapel until his death in 1641; the dome was then completed by Giovanni Lanfranco.

Saint Januarius, patron of Naples
Januarius was bishop of Benevento in the second half of the 3rd century. According to the oldest Acts, he went to Misenum to visit the imprisoned deacon Sossius and was himself arrested with his companions; having refused to deny the faith, he was beheaded in 305, during Diocletian's persecution, near the Solfatara of Pozzuoli. Tradition holds that his nurse Eusebia gathered his blood. His cult spread quickly: as early as the 5th century, in the catacombs of Capodimonte, he is shown between Vesuvius and Monte Somma.
For Neapolitans Saint Januarius is a close, familiar protector, whom they address with confidence in the face of personal fears and shared disasters, above all eruptions of Vesuvius and earthquakes. The gilded-faced bust that holds his head has earned him the affectionate nickname «yellow face».
At the heart of the devotion is the wait for the liquefaction of his blood, kept in an ampoule. In the front rows sit the «parenti», women of the people who, in popular belief, descend from the saint and his nurse, and who urge him on with songs and invocations, scolding him affectionately if the prodigy is slow to come. When the blood liquefies it is felt as a blessing on the city; failure to do so, which has happened on very few occasions, is considered a bad omen.

From the cathedral to the Treasure Chapel
In the cathedral's nave the highlights are the frescoes by Luca Giordano, along with the marble decoration and side altars accumulated over the centuries. From the cathedral one reaches the basilica of Santa Restituta, one of the oldest Christian buildings in the city, with early Christian mosaics, and the 4th-century baptistery of San Giovanni in Fonte, considered the oldest in the West, with late antique mosaics. Going down into the monumental Succorpo chapel, visitors reach the saint's relics. Recently the cathedral has also opened a rooftop walk with views over the historic centre.
Beyond the monumental gate lies the Royal Chapel of the Treasure of San Gennaro, one of the masterpieces of Neapolitan Baroque: the dome with Giovanni Lanfranco's Paradise, Domenichino's frescoes and paintings on copper, and Jusepe de Ribera's Saint Januarius emerging unharmed from the furnace. The porphyry high altar, designed by Francesco Solimena and completed in 1722, is faced with a silver antependium by Giandomenico Vinaccia depicting the return of the saint's bones to Naples in 1497 from the monastery of Montevergine. Behind the altar, the safe given in 1667 by Charles II of Spain holds the ampoules and opens only with two keys, the Deputation's and the archbishop's.
Next to the chapel, the Museum of the Treasure of San Gennaro gathers the gifts of seven centuries of devotion, including the Necklace of San Gennaro, made of jewels given by sovereigns from all over Europe, and the 1713 Mitre, set with nearly four thousand diamonds, rubies and emeralds.

The three appointments with the blood
The first appointment of the year is the Saturday before the first Sunday of May. The bust and the reliquary with the ampoules, together with the silver busts of the city's co-patron saints, are carried in procession from the cathedral to the basilica of Santa Chiara, in memory of the first translation of the relics; along the way the parishes greet the saint with incense and the ringing of bells. The procession was called «degli infrascati» because the clergy shielded themselves from the sun with wreaths of flowers.
19 September, the anniversary of the martyrdom, is the best-known solemnity. It is preceded by a novena and, on the evening of the 18th, by First Vespers in the cathedral, with the lighting of the votive lamp, whose oil is offered by a guest diocese (in 2026, Vallo della Lucania). On the 19th the archbishop opens the safe in the Treasure Chapel, the ampoules and bust are brought to the high altar and, at the end of Mass, the prodigy is announced; eight days of thanksgiving follow, with the relics on display.
On 16 December the Feast of the Patronage is celebrated, recalling the 1631 eruption of Vesuvius: according to tradition, the lava stopped at the gates of the city before the saint's blood and bust.

Visiting the cathedral and the Treasure
The cathedral stands on Via Duomo, in the historic centre, a few steps from the Forcella district. Entry to the Chapel and Museum of the Treasure of San Gennaro, run by the Deputation, is by time slot, booked on the Chapel's official website (cappellasangennaro.it); the ticket includes a visitor app, and guided groups must use radio headsets.
On 19 September the cathedral opens early in the morning and stays open into the evening for the celebrations: those who wish to admire its artworks calmly can visit in the days before. To find your way around the city, the Municipality of Naples runs a network of Tourist Info Points, including one in Piazza del Gesù Nuovo, listed on the official website of the City of Naples DMO.
