A sanctuary destroyed and rebuilt many times

The sanctuary has its roots in the first centuries of Christianity: it stands on the site of a temple dedicated to Minerva, part of whose sacrificial altar is preserved on the right as you enter. The inscriptions, mostly in Latin, trace the church's history from its consecration on 1 August 343, attributed to Pope Julius I.

Because of its exposed seaside position, the church was destroyed five times, first under the edicts of Diocletian and Galerius against Christians and then repeatedly by Saracen and Turkish raids, and was always rebuilt on the same perimeter walls. In 1507 the Del Balzo family had it rebuilt, and Bishop Giacomo del Balzo commissioned the painting of the Virgin and Child from Palma il Giovane.

The present building, the sixth, was rebuilt in 1720 by Bishop Giovanni Giannelli, who disguised it as a civilian dwelling resembling a two-storey fortress to deter further raids; of the earlier church only the 16th-century inner portal survives. In 1959 John XXIII joined the name of Leuca to that of the diocese of Ugento, and in 1990 the sanctuary was raised to basilica.

Our Lady 'at the ends of the earth'

The sanctuary has two names. 'Leuca' comes from Greek and evokes a white, sunlit land; 'de Finibus Terrae', at the ends of the earth, is the promontory's Latin name. Today the Virgin of Leuca is also called 'Our Lady of the Frontiers', reaching out towards the East to unite rather than divide. Tradition holds that St Peter landed here on his way to Rome, and pilgrims bound for the Holy Land left Italy by rounding this very cape.

At the heart of the devotion is the miracle of 13 April 365: according to the chronicles, a tidal wave threatened Cape Leuca and the Virgin, invoked by the inhabitants, calmed the waters. Ever since, on that day each year, the faithful of the surrounding villages walk to the sanctuary to give thanks.

Illustrious pilgrims have knelt before the image of the Virgin, among them, according to tradition, St Francis of Assisi returning from the East and St Benedict Joseph Labre. On 14 June 2008 Benedict XVI celebrated Mass here, observing that the sanctuary, stretched between Europe and the Mediterranean, recalls the universality of the Church.

The basilica, the square and the lighthouse

The interior is a Latin cross with Baroque decoration. On the 1726 high altar of polychrome marble hangs the painting of the Virgin by Palma il Giovane: according to tradition, in the fire of 1624 the flames died out when they reached the faces of the Virgin and Child, and the surviving part is the one displayed today, crowned in 1722. In the middle of the church stands an 18th-century pulpit of Lecce stone showing St Peter preaching and baptising and the Annunciation, to which the basilica is dedicated. The side chapels hold paintings dedicated to, among others, St Francis of Paola, St Peter and St Benedict Joseph Labre.

The three bronze doors by the sculptor Armando Marrocco commemorate the Jubilee of 2000. Next to the basilica, the Vito Mele Museum, opened in 2004, gathers more than 120 works by Italian artists.

On the large square stand the Baroque Marian column of 1694 and the lighthouse, built in 1866 and 47 metres tall. From the belvedere, in the morning, you can make out the Greek islands and the mountains of Albania. In the pine wood runs the monumental Way of the Cross, with fifteen bronze groups along a route of about one and a half kilometres, and towards the sea descends the monumental staircase with the Apulian Aqueduct cascade, built in 1939.

The feasts of the year

The sanctuary's calendar opens on 25 March with the solemnity of the Annunciation, the basilica's title. On 13 April the miracle of the tidal wave is remembered: it is the day of thanksgiving to the Virgin, when people come on foot from the surrounding villages. On 1 August the anniversary of the sanctuary's consecration, attributed to Pope Julius I, is celebrated.

The busiest moment is mid-August. On the evening of the 14th the statue of the Virgin is carried in a torchlight procession along the square and Via Pirreca, where it meets the penitential pilgrimage that sets out from the parish of Cristo Re in the Leuca marina; Mass on the square follows. On 15 August, the Feast of the Assumption, the afternoon brings the procession at sea with the statue of the Virgin, the bishop and the authorities, and the feast, which draws thousands of pilgrims, ends after midnight with fireworks.

Pilgrims can obtain the plenary indulgence at the sanctuary, under the usual conditions, on some of these dates, including 25 March, 13 April and 1 August.

Welcoming pilgrims

The basilica stands on the Leuca promontory, at the far tip of Italy, looking out to sea between East and West. The sanctuary asks parish priests and group leaders to book visits and celebrations in advance so that reception can be well organised, and it runs its own information centre.

For accommodation the sanctuary points to its Welcome Leuca reception service (www.welcomeleuca.it), which runs the sanctuary's facilities: the 'Maris Stella' holiday house and the 'Albergo del Santuario', with conference rooms and an internal chapel. After visiting the church, the route naturally continues on the square and to the belvedere, and those with time can walk the Way of the Cross in the pine wood.
