Irpinia and Basilicata food festivals: a verified calendar, from August to November
Between Irpinia and Basilicata, summer and autumn are marked by festivals devoted to a single product: wine in August and September, truffles and chestnuts in October and November, cheeses and peasant pasta in the smallest villages. This guide gathers only events documented by institutional sources, such as the Province of Avellino's Sistema Irpinia portal, municipal websites and official product profiles, giving the latest verified edition. Dates change every year: use it to choose when to travel, then check the updated calendar before leaving.
August: Taurasi and Lapio, wine in the villages
In August, wine Irpinia takes to the squares. The Province of Avellino's Sistema Irpinia portal documents the Taurasi Wine Fair, devoted to the DOCG red: in 2026 it ran from Tuesday 11 to Saturday 15 August, with wine and music in the village; in 2025, titled 'Il vino che danza', from 13 to 17 August. The same portal lists guided visits to Taurasi linked to the Irpinia Express historic train, with stops at the Castello Marchionale, the archaeological museum and the regional Irpinia wine centre. A few kilometres away, Lapio celebrates Fiano: the village page on Sistema Irpinia places the Fiano Love Fest on the first weekend of August, with stands from local wineries, and Qualigeo reported the 2026 edition, the fifteenth, from 7 to 9 August. Two nearby festivals, two different wines: a good reason to stay several nights in the area.

September: Greco di Tufo and Montoro onions
The Tufo Greco Festival, according to Sistema Irpinia, is usually held in the first week of September. In 2026 it reached its fortieth edition, from 4 to 6 September, with a project called 'L'Oro d'Irpinia' devoted to Greco di Tufo and to the culture of wine and sulphur. The Irpinia wine consortium lists Torrioni and Petruro Irpino among the appellation's eight municipalities: in Torrioni the 34th Fusillo, Porchetta and Greco di Tufo Festival ran from 17 to 19 July 2026, while for the Fusillo and Greco festival in Petruro the latest edition we could verify is the 36th, on 13 and 14 August 2024. In Montoro the Pro Loco Città di Montoro held the first edition of 'L'Oro di Montoro – Copper Onion Festival' on 14 and 15 September 2024: it is the only one we found on institutional sources, so we do not know whether it will recur. It is the month when harvests form the backdrop to the festivals.

October: the Nero di Bagnoli
October in Irpinia means above all Bagnoli Irpino. 'Il Nero di Bagnoli – Black Truffle Fair, Chestnut, Truffle and Laceno Products Festival' takes place over two weekends in the old centre, along a food route of almost three kilometres, organised by the Pro Loco Bagnoli Irpino-Laceno with the Municipality. The Municipality of Bagnoli Irpino has set the 47th edition for 23, 24, 25 and 29, 30, 31 October 2026, and has published notices on parking and services. The festival began in December 1975 as a tribute to the chestnut harvest; the truffle was added later, because on the Picentini mountains its harvest starts in October. In the editions documented by Sistema Irpinia the programme included guided visits to the Collegiate Church and its wooden choir, the convent of San Domenico and Castello Cavaniglia, and walks on the Laceno plateau; in 2023, on the busiest Sundays, entry to the village was staggered.

November: Montella chestnuts and the Festival of Festivals
At the start of November it is Montella's turn. The Municipality lists the 42nd Montella IGP Chestnut Festival: the event page starts on Sunday 1 November 2026 and the calendar on the municipal home page also shows Friday 6, Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 November. For the 2023 edition, Sistema Irpinia described days running from morning to late evening with more than a hundred stands, show cooking by the cooks' association, children's shows, bands and roaming groups, and farm associations' stands. The Irpinian festival season then ends in Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi with 'La Sagra delle Sagre', devoted to chestnuts, cured meats, cheeses, wines, crafts and folklore: the latest edition we could verify is the 24th, from 14 to 16 November 2025, organised by the Pro Loco Alta Irpinia; the 2026 dates do not yet appear to be published. For seeing autumn Irpinia without the October crowds, November is a good compromise.

Village feasts: the Juta, the Middle Ages, Calitri
Not all festivals are food fairs, but many combine devotion, music and food. In Ospedaletto d'Alpinolo the Juta a Montevergine, according to Sistema Irpinia, closes the cycle of pilgrimages to the 'Seven Madonnas' and opens the wait for Candlemas; in 2026 it ran from 10 to 12 September, with the Pro Loco's food stands, music groups and, on the 11th, a procession of carts, wagons and gigs in honour of Mamma Schiavona. In Rocca San Felice the 29th edition of 'Medioevo alla Rocca', organised by the Pro Loco Ansanto, took place from 20 to 23 August 2026, with falconers, crafts, medieval music and a costumed banquet by reservation; in 2024 the menu included spelt and pulse soup, wild boar stew, hippocras and mead. In Calitri the Municipality publishes a calendar that includes the feast of San Canio on 25 May, the Sponz Fest directed by Vinicio Capossela in August, the Interregional Fair of typical products between late August and early September and, in December, the 'scarpegghia' festival and the living nativity.

Basilicata: Matera, Teana and Filiano
In Basilicata the calendar is more fragmented, but some dates are solid. In Matera, 2 July is the patronal feast of Maria Santissima della Bruna, for which the Municipality publishes visitor service information every year. In Teana, in the Serrapotamo valley, the Municipality presented its 'Estateana' programme for August 2026, with the miskiglio rasckatielli festival, the Miskiglio Book Festival along 'La Via del Miskiglio', stops of the Miskiglio Folk Festival, a festival of porchetta, lagane and beans and, from 7 to 9 August, celebrations for the Madonna delle Grazie and Saint Anthony. In Filiano, according to Qualigeo, a festival devoted to the PDO pecorino has been held since 1972, and the platform reported its 51st edition. Qualigeo also mentions an annual red aubergine festival in Rotonda, for which, however, we found no official dates.

How to enjoy a festival without being overwhelmed
The biggest festivals, like Bagnoli's, draw large weekend crowds: to enjoy them, arrive on Friday evening or Saturday morning, leave the car in the designated car parks and use shuttles where available. Smaller festivals, such as those in the Greco villages or the Serrapotamo valley, are instead chances to meet the community, where it is worth stopping to talk with the cooks. I suggest choosing one festival per day and spending the rest of the time in the village: churches, castles, trails and wineries are often specially open on those days. The Irpinia Express historic train, when scheduled, is a convenient, no-driving way to reach some festivals. Booking accommodation well ahead is essential in the October weeks and around mid-August. And with wine involved, always a designated driver or public transport.
A calendar to check every year
The editions cited in this guide are the most recent we could verify on institutional sources as of 11 October 2026: for some festivals the 2026 edition is given, already held or announced; for others, such as the Sagra delle Sagre, the Petruro festival or the Montoro onion festival, the latest verified edition dates from 2024 or 2025, and we say so explicitly. Each festival's period tends to repeat, but exact dates, length and programmes change. Before booking, check the Sistema Irpinia portal for the province of Avellino, the websites of the municipalities involved and the pages of consortia and Pro Loco associations. We do not list festivals found only on commercial sites or aggregators, however popular: we prefer a shorter but reliable list. Apulica can help build a trip around an event, arranging visits and stops with local operators.
A thread for your journey
Journey idea: an Irpinian autumn over three weekends, with Greco in Tufo in early September, the Nero di Bagnoli and Laceno in October and Montella chestnuts in early November; or an August between the Taurasi Wine Fair, Lapio's Fiano Love Fest and, moving to Basilicata, the miskiglio summer in Teana. Dates to be checked each year, visits and stops to be arranged with the operators.
