San Giovanni Rotondo: pilgrimage and town

San Giovanni Rotondo rewards a clear question: are you interested in pilgrimage, town history or architecture serving a religious community? We propose connecting those perspectives without confusing them. A place of reflection calls for attention to people using it; the town can open a conversation about everyday Gargano life. For travellers with different interests, we can design a day with room for faith and cultural interpretation, rather than a sequence of unrelated stops.

Why go

San Giovanni Rotondo lies in a valley at the centre of Gargano, at about 600 metres, at the foot of Monte Calvo, the promontory's highest peak. The Region's tourism portal describes it as a small town in the heart of the Gargano National Park that has become one of the great centres of international religious tourism thanks to Padre Pio of Pietrelcina, who lived and worked here for more than fifty years.

Every year millions of pilgrims come to visit the saint's places: the Capuchin friary, the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie and the large church designed by Renzo Piano, whose crypt holds his remains. Next to the sanctuary stands the Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza, the hospital founded by the friar.

Yet San Giovanni Rotondo is not only its sanctuary. The old town keeps the layout of a medieval village with walls, towers and small churches, and the surrounding area offers the valleys, caves and trails of inland Gargano. Whether you travel for faith, culture or nature, it deserves more time than a visit of a few hours.

History

The town's history is older than its sanctuary. The municipality's tourism site mentions tombs with Daunian geometric pottery dating from the sixth to fourth centuries BC, evidence of a settlement placed strategically on transhumance and trade routes between Gargano and the Tavoliere. The first written mention dates from 1095; in the fourteenth century the village became an important economic centre and was given walls. The name comes from the circular early medieval baptistery, the “Rotonda” of San Giovanni, which according to the regional portal stands on the remains of an ancient temple dedicated to Janus.

Capuchin friars have lived in the friary and the old church since 1540. In 1916 the young Fra Pio of Pietrelcina arrived, born Francesco Forgione in 1887: on 20 September 1918, in the choir of the old church, he received the stigmata, and from then on the friary was bound to his life. As early as the 1920s the growing number of pilgrims made the small church inadequate.

Padre Pio wanted a hospital, the Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza, opened in 1956. He died on 23 September 1968, was beatified in 1999 and canonised on 16 June 2002. The twentieth century also brought the bauxite mine, for decades the largest industrial workplace in the province.

What to see

The tour of Padre Pio's places begins at the friary, where you can visit his cell and the choir of the old church, essentially unchanged since his arrival. Next to it stands Santa Maria delle Grazie, designed by Giuseppe Gentile and consecrated on 1 July 1959: three naves, a large apse mosaic showing Our Lady of Graces and Saint Pio, and the old altar table on which the saint celebrated until 1968, now set into the high altar.

The church of Saint Pio of Pietrelcina, conceived by Renzo Piano with liturgical design by Crispino Valenziano, was commissioned by the Capuchins to house the saint's relics and the busiest celebrations. The regional portal mentions its shell shape, its stone arches and the altar and cross by Arnaldo Pomodoro; in the lower church an iconographic path leads the faithful towards the crypt holding the relics.

The old town deserves a separate walk. The walls built under Frederick II enclose narrow lanes and small churches such as Sant'Orsola, Sant'Onofrio and the chapel of the Madonna di Loreto; the Norman-Swabian cylindrical tower, to the west, houses the Museum of Popular Arts. East of the town stands the Rotonda of San Giovanni Battista, restored and reopened.

Food and wine

The traditional cooking of San Giovanni Rotondo is that of inland Gargano: bread, pulses, wild greens and oil. The municipality's tourism site collects some folk recipes handed down in families. Lu panecotte combines stale bread, potatoes, wild greens, cherry tomatoes, garlic and bay leaf, dressed with raw olive oil and served with black olives; an even simpler version uses only bread, garlic, bay and oil, eaten with onion.

Lajene e cice is hand-rolled pasta, rolled up and cut with a knife, cooked with chickpeas and a sauce of cherry tomatoes, with a touch of chilli if you like; other recipes use dried broad beans with potatoes and bread. These dishes tell of a cuisine of simple resources, where bread is never wasted and pulses give the meal substance.

The area belongs to the olive-growing zones of Gargano's southern slope: the Park lists San Giovanni Rotondo, together with Monte Sant'Angelo and Mattinata, among the areas where Ogliarola garganica prevails and where Dauno PDO extra virgin oil with the mention Gargano is produced. For the whole promontory, the Ministry's portal also mentions caciocavallo and handmade orecchiette.

Things to do

For those arriving on pilgrimage, the Pilgrimage Office on the forecourt of the church of Saint Pio welcomes groups and individuals: it organises multilingual guided tours of the saint's places and the new church, provides rooms for meetings and meals, hands out maps of the sanctuary and handles bookings for occasions such as the Marian torchlight procession.

The area also offers routes of nature and spirituality. The Way of Saint Camillus in the Valle dell'Inferno follows an old transhumance mule track to the place where, on 2 February 1575, Saint Camillus de Lellis underwent his conversion, marked by a large cross on the plateau; the route is graded for expert hikers because of some steep stretches. The Valle Grande holds a cave complex and a plateau used from the Neolithic to the Metal Ages.

Walkers can set off from here on the Grande Traversata Garganica, the waymarked loop of about 200 kilometres that starts and ends in San Giovanni Rotondo and crosses the Foresta Umbra. For a different chapter of history, the municipality's site tells the story of the bauxite mine, which from the 1930s was the province's largest industrial workplace.

When to go

San Giovanni Rotondo can be visited in every season: the sanctuary welcomes pilgrims all year round. Spring and autumn are best for combining the religious visit with outings to the valleys and caves nearby; the municipality's site, for example, describes the Valle Grande as walkable all year, warning that bees may be present in the cave in summer.

For those travelling out of devotion, some dates in the saint's life are especially meaningful: 20 September, anniversary of the stigmata received in 1918 in the choir of the old church; 23 September, the day of his death in 1968; and 16 June, the date of his canonisation in 2002. The programme of celebrations should be checked each year on the sanctuary's website.

Those looking for a quieter visit may prefer weekdays and months away from these anniversaries. Winter, with its shorter days, remains suitable for visiting the sanctuary and the old town.

Getting there and around

The municipality's tourism site explains that drivers coming from Foggia take the expressway towards Manfredonia and leave at the San Giovanni Rotondo junction; the town is about 30 kilometres from Foggia and 20 from Monte Sant'Angelo. Rail travellers get off at Foggia station: SITA buses for San Giovanni Rotondo leave from the station forecourt, also linking the town with nearby places.

For longer journeys, Ferrovie del Gargano long-distance coaches connect San Giovanni Rotondo directly with Rome and several cities in central and northern Italy, including Bologna, Milan, Turin and Parma. Intercity travel on the promontory is part of the regional COTRAP network. The nearest airport for scheduled flights is Bari, reachable by transfer; Foggia also has an airport run by Aeroporti di Puglia.

In town there is an urban bus service, and the regional portal notes that cars, scooters and bicycles can be hired or taxis used. The sanctuary and the old town are within easy walking distance of each other.

Where to stay

San Giovanni Rotondo has a long tradition of hospitality linked to pilgrimage, with hotels, guest rooms, B&Bs, hostels and rural tourism accommodation in the countryside. Pilgrims can choose a place near the sanctuary to walk to services and to the Pilgrimage Office; those who prefer the atmosphere of the town can look for a room near the old centre.

A special form of hospitality is offered by the square Norman-Swabian tower on the east side of town: privately owned and recently restored, it has been turned into a hostel welcoming pilgrims on the Via Francigena. Among identified places, the Hotel Vittoria, at Via Santa Vittoria 4, has a restaurant open to non-residents too, with local dishes and a panoramic terrace. It is an editorial reference, not an Apulica partnership.

For those who also want to explore the rest of Gargano, San Giovanni Rotondo is a good base for reaching Monte Sant'Angelo, the Foresta Umbra and the coast of the Gulf of Manfredonia.

Nearby

About 20 kilometres away, Monte Sant'Angelo completes a journey through Gargano's places of faith: the sanctuary of Saint Michael, a UNESCO site, offers a comparison between two forms of pilgrimage very different in period and setting. The two towns can be visited on the same day or on two consecutive days.

Inland, the Grande Traversata Garganica leads from San Giovanni Rotondo to the Sant'Egidio marsh, the Valle della Fratta, Monte Spigno and then the Foresta Umbra, with its UNESCO-listed beech woods. About three kilometres from town, at the foot of Monte Calvo, stands the church of Sant'Egidio di Pantano.

Heading down to the sea you reach the Gulf of Manfredonia; further north-east the coast continues to Vieste and Peschici, with their old towns overlooking the Adriatic. Each direction lets you pair the sanctuary with a day devoted to nature or the sea.
