Castel del Monte: looking at geometry

Castel del Monte becomes more interesting when it stops being a riddle to solve and becomes a building to observe. A regular form, different materials and openings onto the landscape offer a concrete route. Apulica connects it with the territory still working around it: towns, vineyards and tables. The visit should end beyond a photograph of the octagonal outline, with a recognisable relationship between building and countryside.

Why go

Castel del Monte is one of Italy's most recognisable monuments and, according to the regional tourism portal, the very symbol of Puglia. It stands alone on a hill at about 540 metres, in the municipality of Andria and inside the Alta Murgia National Park, and its octagonal silhouette can be seen from far away above the Murgia countryside.

It has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1996. UNESCO describes it as a unique example of medieval military architecture, commissioned by Frederick II in the thirteenth century with mathematical and astronomical precision in its plan and setting, and blending elements from classical antiquity, the Islamic East and northern European Cistercian Gothic.

Visiting means entering a building designed around an idea: the number eight repeated in the plan, the towers and the courtyard, the pale Murgia stone set against coral breccia, and keystones carved with real and fantastical figures. Outside, the open landscape of Alta Murgia and the vineyards of the Castel del Monte DOC area complete the visit, which at sunset, the regional portal notes, offers one of the most striking sights.

History

The castle dates from the thirteenth century: the first document that allows it to be dated is from 1240, during the reign of Frederick II of Swabia, Holy Roman Emperor. According to the regional directorate of national museums in Puglia, its position looks remote today, but at the time it stood close to the route linking Andria to Garagnone, near Gravina, and was part of the emperor's communication network.

Its purpose has long been debated. The term castrum points to defence, but the ancillary structures and the quality of the sculpture also suggest a residence for display. The Ministry of Culture describes it as a place combining comfort, control of the territory and a symbol of power: the octagon, as in the imperial crown and the Palatine Chapel in Aachen, is thought to represent the union of the circle, figure of the divine, and the square, figure of the human.

After a long period of neglect, during which it was gradually stripped of its furnishings, the castle was recovered. In 1928, during excavation and restoration work, two sculptural fragments were found, a laurel-crowned head and a headless bust, now kept in Bari.

What to see

The castle stands directly on a rock shelf and is built entirely on the number eight: an octagonal plan, eight octagonal towers set at the corners, an octagonal courtyard and sixteen trapezoidal rooms, eight on each floor. Each room has a cross vault with a keystone carved with plant, animal or human motifs; the theme of squaring the circle often recurs.

Colour is part of the design. The pale Murgia limestone is paired with coral breccia, reserved for the most important elements such as the entrance portal, the passages between rooms and some finishings of fireplaces and two- and three-light windows; traces remain of mosaic floors with inlays of white marble and slate, including a fragment in the eighth room on the ground floor.

A few pieces of the rich original decoration survive and are worth seeking out: the slab with the Procession of Knights, the two human-figure corbels in the Falconer's Tower, the telamons supporting the umbrella vault of one of the stair towers and the keystone of the so-called throne room on the upper floor. The regional portal also mentions the mythological creatures carved on the keystones of the inner rooms.

Food and wine

The castle gives its name to one of Puglia's most important wine appellations. The Castel del Monte DOC area covers many municipalities in the provinces of Barletta-Andria-Trani and Bari, with white, rosé and red wines; for the reds the main grapes are Nero di Troia, Montepulciano and Aglianico. There are also three appellations devoted to the more structured reds: Castel del Monte Rosso Riserva, with at least 65% Nero di Troia, Castel del Monte Nero di Troia Riserva and Castel del Monte Bombino Nero, produced in Minervino Murge and parts of Andria, Corato, Trani, Ruvo, Terlizzi, Bitonto and other municipalities.

The oil bears the castle's name too. Terra di Bari PDO extra virgin oil must carry a geographical mention, and the Castel del Monte mention requires at least 80% Coratina olives: the result is an intensely fruity oil with medium bitterness and pungency.

In Andria, some twenty kilometres away, there are two well-known specialities: Burrata di Andria, a pasta filata cheese registered as a PGI in 2016, and sugared almonds, celebrated by the Confetti Museum. A day at the castle ends well with a stop at a winery or at the table in town.

Things to do

Besides the castle visit, the surrounding area invites you to discover the Alta Murgia countryside and the vineyards of the appellation. Several wineries in the area offer tours and tastings along the Castel del Monte DOC Wine Route.

Among them, Cantine Torrevento is housed in a seventeenth-century former Benedictine monastery, with thick stone walls and cellars about eight metres underground, where the wines age; the old restored stable is now a stone tasting room. On 6 October 2026 the winery listed a cellar-only visit at 10 euros per person, without tasting or meal. It is an editorial reference, not an Apulica partnership, and conditions should be checked for your travel date.

The castle also takes part in national museum initiatives such as European Heritage Days and the European Night of Museums, which may offer special openings. For visitors travelling with a dog, the museums directorate mentions a dog-sitting service during the visit. A guided tour helps to recognise the surviving sculptures and to understand the relationship between the monument and the Murgia landscape.

When to go

Castel del Monte is a state museum and can be visited all year round. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons for combining the castle with walks in the Murgia countryside and winery visits. In summer, morning and late afternoon are the best times, also to enjoy the light on the stone.

The regional tourism portal suggests experiencing the castle at sunset, when the sun sinks behind the towers and the stone changes colour. In Andria, in August, the Castel dei Mondi festival brings contemporary theatre to town and can be combined with a visit to the monument.

During the year the castle takes part in national initiatives such as the European Night of Museums in spring and European Heritage Days at the end of September, with special openings and activities. Dates and arrangements change every year and should be checked on the website of the regional directorate of national museums in Puglia.

Getting there and around

Castel del Monte is located in Contrada Castel del Monte, along State Road 170, about 20 kilometres from Andria, in the heart of the Alta Murgia National Park. The most practical way to get there is by car: for those arriving on the A14 motorway, the Alta Murgia Park points to the Trani, Molfetta, Bitonto and Bari exits, from which roads lead to the Murgia towns.

For rail travellers, the regional portal notes that Andria station mainly serves nearby towns, while for long distances it is better to reach Barletta; from Bari, the Bari-Nord railway also links Palese airport with the city and the towns of the province. The reference airport is Bari. Andria has urban and suburban buses and COTRAP intercity lines, and cars, scooters and bicycles can be hired.

For information before your visit, the Andria Info-point is in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II. From the castle, the surrounding countryside is best explored by car or bike, combining the visit with wineries and the towns of Alta Murgia.

Where to stay

There is no town next to the castle: for an overnight stay you choose between the city and the countryside. Andria, some twenty kilometres away, is the closest base, with an old town of lanes and squares, the cathedral and the chance to dine in town after the visit; it offers hotels and B&Bs for those who prefer to walk in the evening.

In the Murgia countryside and the vineyards of the Castel del Monte appellation there are masserie and farm stays, suited to those who want to stay close to the castle and the open landscape of the park, perhaps to see it at sunset or at first light. In this case a car is essential.

Those who prefer the sea can choose a base on the coast, in Trani or Barletta, and drive up to the castle for the day. Either way, it is worth giving the monument and its surroundings a full half-day rather than squeezing it between other transfers.

Nearby

Andria is the natural complement to the visit. The regional portal mentions the old town with the Casalino quarter, the church of Sant'Agostino and the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, of Norman origin, which holds the relic of the Holy Thorn and, in its crypt, the burials of two of Frederick II's wives; in town you can also visit the Confetti Museum and the shops where burrata can be tasted.

Frederick II's network continues along the coast: Trani, with its Romanesque cathedral by the sea and its Swabian castle, and Barletta are a short drive away. To the south, the castle's position on the old route between Andria and Garagnone recalls its link with Gravina in Puglia and the Murgia plateau.

The Alta Murgia National Park covers a wide territory of pastures, woods and towns such as Altamura, Gravina, Spinazzola and Minervino Murge, linked by the roads the Park suggests for those arriving from the A14. A two- or three-day itinerary can combine the castle, the Adriatic coast and the towns of the Murgia.
